Kyo Kushi (boxwood combs)
The production of Kyoto boxwood combs has a long history dating back to the Heian period. The boxwood is first cut out, dried, and treated, then the teeth of the comb are cut with a saw and filed down to create these beautiful combs which come in all sizes. These combs are ideal in that it is made of the soft but sturdy boxwood, which does not cause static through its use. Moreover, it is widely used in Kyoto not only for hair arrangements, but for tsuzuriori of Nishijin textiles and as the head dress for Kyoto dolls. This beautiful product is made from wood that has been dried for seventeen years and is made through a cultivated and labor intensive skill.
