Fukusui Plant
A factory built on Mukujima in 1873, with funds for industrial advancement provided by Kyoto Prefecture. As Kyoto's first modern factory, it introduced the latest Western industrial technology. The plant provided a wood shop and a casting shop and set up construction machines. Using a water wheel whose source of energy was the Uji River, the factory produced tools and other instruments using coal as a fuel. The products made consisted of a variety of goods such as Western agricultural tools, iron pipes, textile tools, printing machines,@crematories, and pumps. Also, in 1881, Akashi took on such projects as making a currency casting machine for the Korean government.
