Forerunners in Kyoto's Industries/Industrial Forerunners in Kyoto

Kyoto City Museum of Commerce
Commercial Exhibition Showroom Based on a proposition by the Commitee of the Bureau for Industrial Advancement in Kyoto, an exhibition of products by key industries in the city was held in 1906. A permanent facility was established in 1909 in Okazaki park in the Sakyo Ward to encourage overseas trade as well. The original building had a floorspace of approximately 990 square meters and was made of brick in a Renaissance style. In 1926, it was named the Kyoto City Craft Center and in 1929, it was renamed the Kyoto City . In 1931, the facility was moved in order to build the City Museum in that location. However, in 1937, it was rebuilt adjacent to the Bureau for Industrial Advancement building, during the reconstruction of the latter. This new facility, which held public exhibitions of foreign and domestic merchandise as well as collector's items, also began to conduct researches for the promotion of local industries. In 1942, it became an extension to the building of the Bureau for Industrial Advancement and in 1962, it was made into an annex of the National Modern Arts Museum.
