Forerunners in Kyoto's Industries/Industrial Forerunners in Kyoto

Shinkyogoku
One of the busiest streets in Kyoto, running north-south between Sanjo and Shijo Avenues. It was designed by Masanao Makimura in 1872 as part of the new city planning during the Meiji Restoration when the capital moved from Kyoto to Tokyo. Built on the premises of old ruined temples centered around the grounds of Seiganji temple, Shinkyogoku has become a popular entertainment district. Its name comes from the fact that it was built east of the former Kyogoku Street (now Teramachi Street) in the eastern part of the old capital, Heiankyo. It began as an area for morning markets, which later became a prosperous shopping area with electricity and movie theaters by 1908, bringing in business to the surrounding areas as well. Presently, there is a large variety of commercial enterprises ranging from souvenir shops catering to visitors to retail stores, restaurants and movie theaters.
